In this weeks meeting with Wendy we discussed my project proposal, in which I outlined my intention to further pursue the concept of the "Call of the Void" in relation to the uncanny atmosphere that I believe is present in the "Darkrooms" of gay men's clubs and saunas. We discussed how these places act as a liminal space where fantasy and reality collide, where these men are able to engage in there deepest desires. In regards to these spaces them self's Wendy recommended that it was time to get together as much visual research as I could, preferably by visiting these locations and photographing them myself. It does so happen that their is one nearby and I also know the owners, so this is something I will arrange for as soon as possible.
Wendy recommended looking at the work of Antony Luvera who worked on a photographic documentary series on the struggles of the LGBT community in Belfast. We also discussed the work of William Eggleston, with particular interest in the famous photo "Red Room", which was taken in a brothel and hosts a similar visual style to the spaces I am concerned with.
We also discussed the possibility of, like Antony Luvera, working with the communities of these spaces regarding this project. If there was somehow a way to get them involved.
