Above is my response to the first task we have been set "The view from your window". As an introductory task, the premise is simple, but I can imagine many others like myself may have over thought it, despite the task clearly stating not to. Its difficult not to put some thought into something that will act as an introduction, this photo is the first representation of me my peers will see, and it will help them to form an idea of who I am. Of course, there is no way for me to know what this idea or concept will be, but non the less, I couldn't help but shoot this same image nearly ten times before I was happy with it.
"I think therefore I am" has become "I photograph, therefore I am"
Should I include the window frame? Should I show some of the room inside? should I cut out the cars? should I show the sky? Should I edit the picture? colour or black and white? analogue vs digital? All questions that immediately popped into my head as I set out to complete such a simple task, because suddenly the answer to each could potentially raise hundreds more questions pertaining to who I am as person and as a photographer.
"I think therefore I am" has become "I photograph, therefore I am" (Exhibition name? perhaps a bit too obvious). But it's true, and the more I think of this, the more I realise that I complete this task every time I upload an image to social media. I am giving all of my Facebook friends not only a snippet into my world, but into my mind. Perhaps I should be as thoughtful of what I post there as I have been to this task.
